Candy Dish is the fifth pattern on the Journey to Nebula Quilt Sew Along. I confess that I finished this in November 2020 but have not had a chance to share until now.
This pattern uses the Hex and More Ruler by Jaybird Quilt Patterns. After reading the instructions and the construction method, I felt the hexagon pieces were begging for some fussy cutting. And I had the perfect fabric for this!
My favorite Alexander Henry Ghastlies! Oh how I love the Ghastlies! This quirky, sassy family just makes you love them in all their eccentricity.
I hoarded about a half yard cut of the family portraits line and thought it would be perfect to fussy cut the family members into their own hexy.
This of course took a little extra time to make sure I got the best use of each print. Unfortunately, fussy cutting always wastes fabric. That's something to keep in mind when planning your project. But how can you not give each Ghastly member their own spot light ???
To fussy cut each hexy, I traced the hexagon shape and manually cut with scissors. I could not use my rotary blade for this process. But it was worth it.
The secret to this pattern is actually in the triangles.
It is so much easier to align all your pieces when the triangle tips are cut off from all three tips. The Hex N More ruler was great for this purpose. My seams matched up pretty well when using this technique.
What do you think? Is this a Halloween Color Combo?
Here are my finished placemats
Saved the bigger prints for the back of the placemats.
Looking forward to Halloween!
This is the end of my Journey to Nebula. I started the Nebula Quilt Block of the Month in January 2021. I am so glad that I did these smaller projects to acquaint myself with the rulers, and working with the bias cut pieces. I learned a lot and I feel confident going into the Nebula Quilt.
